Tuscany Region

Tuscany is an Italian region located in Central Italy, with Florence as its capital.

It borders to the north-west with Liguria, to the north with Emilia-Romagna, to the east with the Marche and Umbria, to the south with Lazio.

To the west, its 397 km of continental coasts are bathed by the Ligurian Sea in the central-northern section between Carrara (mouth of the Parmignola stream, border with Liguria) and the Gulf of Baratti; the Tyrrhenian Sea instead bathes the southern coastal stretch between the promontory of Piombino and the mouth of the Chiarone, which marks the border with Lazio.

The regional capital is Florence, the most populous city (382,000 inhabitants), as well as the main historical, artistic and economic-administrative hub; the other provincial capitals are: Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena.

Tuscany also administers the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, as well as a small exclave located within the borders of Emilia-Romagna, where some hamlets of the municipality of Badia Tedalda are located. The name is very ancient and derives from the ethnonym used by the Latins to define the land inhabited by the Etruscans: "Etruria", later transformed into "Tuscia" and then into "Tuscany".

Eventi in Toscana

Even the borders of today's Tuscany correspond in principle to those of ancient Etruria, which also included parts of the current regions of Lazio and Umbria, up to the Tiber.

Until 1861 it was an independent entity, known as the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Since then it has been part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, of the Kingdom of Italy and today of the Italian Republic. In the Grand Ducal era it also had a hymn, composed by the Florentine Egisto Mosell and entitled La Leopolda.

The regional festival, established in 2001, occurs on November 30, in memory of the aforementioned day in 1786 when the death penalty and torture were abolished in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
