Trentino-Alto Adige - Südtirol Region

Trentino-Alto Adige (official name of the Trentino-Alto Adige / Südtirol Region) is an autonomous region with a special statute in north-eastern Italy, with Trento as its capital.

Following the entry into force of the new statute of autonomy in 1972, the region was largely deprived of authority and most of the competences transferred directly to Trentino, corresponding to the Autonomous Province of Trento, and to Alto Adige, corresponding to the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.

This institutional set-up is attributable to the different linguistic composition of the population, almost completely Italian-speaking in Trentino and mostly German-speaking in Alto Adige with the exception of five municipalities (Bolzano, Bronzolo, Laives, Salorno and Vadena) where the linguistic majority is the Italian one.

Together with Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige belongs to the geographical macro-area of ??the Triveneto. Together with the federal state of Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige is also part of a cross-border cooperation association established within the European Union, the Euroregion Tyrol-Alto Adige-Trentino, which brings together the territories of the ancient county of Tyrol.

Trentino-Alto Adige is a region with a special statute. Its two provinces, the autonomous province of Trento (Trentino) and the autonomous province of Bolzano (Alto Adige) are the only Italian provinces that enjoy a statute of autonomy. The two provincial autonomies are very broad and in fact count more than the region itself: specific rules, based on Title V of the Constitution (even before the 2001 amendments), provide that they are treated as regions, so much so that they also participate in the State-Regions Conference, whose official name is, precisely, the Permanent Conference for relations between the State, the Regions and the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano.

The two autonomous provinces are therefore considered by the Italian state as regions. In addition, the government maintains separate relations with the two provinces: in fact, in the region there are two Government Commissariats, one in Bolzano for Alto Adige and one in Trento for Trentino.
