Friùli-Venezia Giulia Region

Friùli-Venezia Giulia is an autonomous Italian region with special statute of north-eastern Italy with Trieste as its capital.

It is made up of two historical-geographical regions with different cultural characteristics: Friuli and Venezia Giulia. It borders with the Veneto Region.

The name Friuli is of Roman origin and derives from the city of Forum Iulii (now Cividale del Friuli) founded by Julius Caesar towards the middle of the 1st century BC. and became, after the destruction of Aquileia by the Huns in (452 ??AD), the capital of the Venetia et Histria region, in a more secluded but safer foothill position.

With the barbarian invasions the name, contracted in its current form, was extended to the entire surrounding region over which the city exercised its jurisdiction, which became first a duchy, then the brand and finally the county of Friuli.

The name Venezia Giulia also refers to the Roman tradition of Venetia et Histria and the Alpes Iuliae, recalling the substratum of the Venetics and the enterprises of Julius Caesar and Caesar Octavian Augustus, both of the Gens Iulia. It was proposed in 1863 by the Gorizia glottologist Graziadio Ascoli.
