Veneto Region

Veneto is an Italian region with ordinary statute located in the eastern part of Northern Italy; the historical capital and administrative capital is the city of Venice.

It ranks fifth by population, after Lombardy, Lazio, Campania and Sicily. It borders to the north with Trentino-Alto Adige and Austria, to the south with Emilia-Romagna, to the west with Lombardy, to the east with Friuli-Venezia Giulia and to the south-east with the Adriatic Sea.

Together with Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto constitutes the macro-area of ??the Triveneto or the Tre Venezie.

According to Eurostat data from 2015, Veneto is the 6th most visited region in Europe and the first in Italy.

The region takes its name from the people of the Veneti, an Indo-European population who settled in the territory after the middle of the second millennium BC.

But Veneto, a multi-faceted region, also holds treasures of nature, art and traditions on the mainland.
The variety of landscapes is extraordinary: the Dolomites embellished by the pink colors of the sunset, the eastern shore of Lake Garda with Peschiera del Garda, Torri del Benaco and other tourist centers. And then, long and sandy beaches alternating with historic seaside resorts such as Jesolo, Bibione, Cavallino, Caorle.
A rich cultural heritage fits into this spectacular natural setting that makes Veneto a land of singular charm, from the cities of art to the magnificent "Palladian villas" scattered along the Riviera del Brenta, to small villages such as Arquà Petrarca, Monselice, Asolo, Bassano del Grappa that collect the most characteristic aspects of this multifaceted region.
Veneto is also the ideal destination for a holiday dedicated to wellness and relaxation thanks to the presence of thermal waters with precious therapeutic properties: the soft reliefs of the Euganean Hills host the equipped centers of the Euganean Spas, such as Abano, Montegrotto and Teolo, allowing you to combine treatments and cures with pleasant excursions in the surrounding area.

A land of great charm, Veneto has innumerable natural and artistic attractions with some "excellences" absolutely not to be missed.
The first stop on an ideal journey to discover the region is undoubtedly Venice, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its lagoon, its islands and the Grand Canal, lined with ancient and richly decorated palaces that evoke the splendor of the ancient Republic Marinara.
Venice, also famous for its historic Carnival, for Murano glass and Burano lace, can be visited on foot along its numerous bridges and narrow streets called "calli", or by boat, from the vaporetto to the gondola. its waters from which to admire unique perspectives and panoramas in the world.
Unforgettable are Piazza San Marco, with the Basilica full of mosaics and domes, the Doge's Palace, the labyrinth of alleys scattered with shops and artisan workshops, the churches adorned with paintings, sculptures and frescoes from every era, the museums and the most hidden, the famous "campi" and "campielli".
Another Venetian site inscribed on the UNESCO list is the historic center of Verona, a singular example of integration between Renaissance, medieval and Roman architecture.
Symbolic monuments of the city are Juliet's romantic balcony, made famous throughout the world by Shakespeare's tragedy, and the arena, which in summer is transformed into a scenic open-air opera house.
In Veneto, nature also represents excellence: the Dolomites have recently become part of the World Heritage sites thanks to their particular conformation which, thanks to the suggestive play of light, offer unique and unforgettable views.
It is the ideal world for ski enthusiasts: an immense area with kilometers of slopes and well-equipped resorts, first of all Cortina d'Ampezzo, the "pearl" of the Dolomites, exclusive and elegant, one of the most famous mountain resorts in the world to spend a summer or winter vacation.
Padua, the city of culture par excellence, offers visitors many attractions, from the Basilica of St. Anthony, a privileged destination for religious tourism, to the magnificent Scrovegni chapel, entirely frescoed by Giotto, a timeless masterpiece of art. Its sixteenth-century Botanical Garden, rich in medicinal plants, is also listed as a World Heritage Site.
The historic center of Vicenza, characterized by the classic style of the architect Andrea Palladio, has deserved UNESCO recognition, together with the wonderful noble villas he built, including Villa Capra Valmarana and Villa Poiana, surrounded by large parks.

There are many other surprises that the region reserves for its visitors in Belluno, Treviso and Rovigo. Even the smallest towns are rich in history and culture: Asolo, a charming medieval village; Possagno, dominated by the Canova mausoleum; the walled cities of Cittadella, Monselice, Montagnana and Castelfranco Veneto.

What to taste
While differing considerably from one province to another, the regional cuisine is based on some common ingredients: rice, vegetables and above all polenta.
The latter, beloved by the Venetians, is prepared and enjoyed as an accompaniment to meat, fish and cheese dishes.
Characteristic are the beans from Lamon (province of Belluno), the asparagus from Bassano del Grappa, the celeriac from Verona and the red radicchio from Treviso, which has become the prince of cuisine not only in Treviso.
Another specialty of this province is the hot soapa, soup with pigeon and chicken meat; in the nearby alpine areas you can also taste mushrooms and roe deer, while the Asiago plateau is renowned for its cheese.
The lagoon cuisine favors the products of the sea.
Among the typical dishes of the area we find fish risotto with scallops, scampi, cuttlefish, saor or sardines macerated in vinegar with onions and creamed cod or Vicenza-style cod. A specialty of Venice is stewed eel (bisato).
There are many typical sweets including pancakes, zaletti, carnival galani and pandoro from Verona, which has now become a national celebrity.
Veneto also boasts a very rich and valuable production of red and white wines, including Amarone della Valpolicella, Breganze Bianco, Bardolino and Soave, just to name the best known.
Passito wines find their highest expression in the Recioto di Soave; sparkling wines are also renowned, including Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene.
Also noteworthy is the production of grappa in Bassano del Grappa and Conegliano.
