Church of Santa Passera

The Church of Santa Passera is a church in Rome, located in the Trastevere district, in Vicolo di Santa Passera.

The church dates back to the beginning of the 5th century, and was built on the remains of a Roman mausoleum and a crypt dating back to the second half of the 2nd century. In the 14th century the ancient church was completely renovated and raised.

The facade of the church is simple and bare, with a marble entrance portal surmounted by an aedicule with a fresco depicting the Madonna and Child. The interior of the church has a single nave, with a semicircular apse.

The main altar is in baroque marble, and houses a canvas depicting the Martyrdom of Santa Passera.

The church is dedicated to Santa Passera, a 3rd century Roman martyr. According to tradition, Santa Passera was a young woman who was killed during the persecutions of the emperor Diocletian.

Her body was buried in the cemetery of Callisto, on the Via Appia Antica. In the 9th century, the relics of Santa Passera were moved to the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere.

In the 14th century, the relics were moved again to the church of Santa Passera, which since then took the name of the saint.

The church of Santa Passera is a very ancient and evocative place of worship.

Its secluded position, in the heart of the Trastevere district, makes it an ideal place for prayer and meditation.
