Piazzaforte Museum - Augusta Palace

In 1990 the Piazzaforte Museum was inaugurated in the Bastion of San Giacomo, inside the Swabian Castle of Augusta.

The structure was divided into three sections that illustrated the periods of the Middle Ages, the ancient regime and the contemporary age. After the restoration work, the museum was reopened only in 2012 with the new director, the lawyer Antonello Forestiere.

The "Sala delle Lapidi", also known as the Entrance Hall, exhibited artifacts such as tombstones, weapons and prints that narrated the military events that took place in the Fortress up to the Italo-Turkish war of 1911-1912.

The "Sala Aeronavale", on the other hand, kept a vast collection of memorabilia relating to the aeronautical activity of Augusta, with particular attention to the episodes of the Second World War.

The "Sala delle Armi" instead contained a vast collection of individual Italian, British and German weapons, as well as cannons, accoutrements, Italian uniforms and headgear.

After the closure in 1996, today the museum is located on the ground floor of the Augusta Palace and constitutes a valuable source of information for military history buffs and for all those who want to delve into the history of the city of Augusta.
