Casina of Cardinal Bessarion

The Casina del Cardinal Bessarione, located along via di Porta S. Sebastiano, at the ancient crossroads of the via Appia with the via Latina, owes its current configuration to the 15th century, with the use of pre-existing medieval structures which in turn incorporated structures from the Roman.

A rare example of an extra-urban Renaissance villa, it stands in an area rich in evidence from the Republican and Imperial ages, it was used as a small hospital at the beginning of the 14th century, then as a monastery and finally in the mid-19th century it became a country inn.

The link with Cardinal Bessarion, humanist and bishop of Tusculum, is perhaps to be attributed to the fact that the nearby Church of S. Cesareo belonged to the bishopric of Tusculum.

The facade has two large Guelph cross windows and a loggia. Inside are two large halls decorated with frescoes and furnished with Renaissance-style works. The restorations have also brought the internal decoration and the lovely Italian garden back to its former glory.
