Alberoni Octagon Island

Inserted in the system of fortifications that the Republic of Venice built against the Turkish threat, this fortified island, placed in front of the contemporary fort Alberoni, had the task, together with the Campana or Abandonato octagon and the Poveglia Octagon, to block the way to ships enemies who had managed to penetrate the lagoon through the port of Malamocco.

Reinforced after the war of Candia, it was modified in the nineteenth century during the Habsburg rule by strengthening the perimeter wall and adding batteries. The walls facing the Alberonis were also armed, probably because the greatest problems would have come from there in the event of an attack.

In 1900 it still had 4 artillery pieces with a 25-man garrison. The Italian military continued to use the Octagon until the end of the Second World War, after which it was bought by private individuals. Currently underbrush and vegetation confirm its progressive degradation.

The island is currently for sale.
