Church of San Giuseppe

The Church of San Giuseppe, also called Chiesa Nuova (chiesanova in Sicilian), is a Catholic church located not far from the head of la cursa in Castellammare del Golfo, in the province of Trapani.

In January 1886, thanks to the interest of the archpriest Michele Plaia and flanked by the Castellammarese people, who offered money and services free of charge, work began on the construction of the church of San Giuseppe in the Petrazzi area on land owned by the Capuchin fathers. These fathers, in fact, on the land they had bought, thought of building a convent and a church for their use, but this project was never carried out.

In fact, there were several difficulties for the construction of the church of San Giuseppe and it was not easy to obtain the land from the Capuchin fathers. For some time, in fact, in this peripheral area of ??Castellammare there had been a hermitage of Franciscan friars, later reformed Capuchins, alongside a hospice for begging they looked after. Furthermore, in the vicinity, the construction of a small church dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine had already begun, never finished. For this reason the stretch of road that goes from the head of la cursa to via Castronovo was once called via Riformati, but following the death of Francesco Crispi the stretch west of the church was dedicated to him and in 1963 the municipality decided to name the stretch to the east of the church after Pope John XXIII.

Once the initial impediments had been overcome and the land obtained from the Capuchin fathers, thanks to the archpriest Michele Plaia and the people who ardently wanted the construction of the New Church, construction work began in January 1886. The contract for the works was entrusted to Mr. Paolo Pillittieri of Monreale.

The works ended in 1902 and the church was inaugurated and opened to the public in the same year. The inhabitants of Castellammara immediately called it a new church due to its recent construction. The church was initially dedicated to the Holy Family of Jesus Mary Joseph, but the parish would later be dedicated only to St. Joseph.
