Church of Saints John and Paul

The Church is known as the Basilica of Saints John and Paul of Rome, erected starting from 398 by the Byzant senator or his son Pammachio on the site of a building, datable between the 1st and 2nd centuries, first used as a domus ecclesiae by a community Christian and then became the burial of the martyrs John and Paul: tradition states that this was the home of the two holy brothers, who would have suffered martyrdom right inside it in 362, during the reign of the emperor Flavius ??Claudius Julian; the most accredited sources argue that the building most likely belonged to the family of the founder, Pammachio; the church is mentioned for the first time in the acts of a synod celebrated by Pope Simmaco in 499 with the name of Titulus Pammachii, or also Titulus Byzantii.

The original church was damaged by the Visigoths of Alaric I during the sack of Rome (410), then by an earthquake in 442 and was finally sacked by the Normans in 1084.
Pope Paschal II (1099 - 1118) promoted the restoration works, added the bell tower and the portico, which replaced the original narthex. The building was continuously remodeled in the following centuries; in particular, the interventions promoted in 1715 by Cardinal Fabrizio Paolucci were noteworthy.

It took on its current appearance in 1951, when Cardinal Francis Joseph Spellman had the paleochristian facade restored.

The church houses the tomb of St. Paul of the Cross, and is officiated by the Passionist fathers.

The clivus Scauri has a stretch that runs alongside the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo.

???????

The clivus Scauri ("clivus of Scaurus") was a road in ancient Rome that rose from the depression between the Palatine and the Caelius along the east side of the latter to its top, where Piazza della Navicella is today. Even today the road has kept its ancient name, in the initial stretch. It branched off from the road that connected the Circus Maximus to the Colosseum just north of the Septizonium, where today the church of San Gregorio al Celio stands, and runs alongside the Basilica of Saints John and Paul.
