Castiglione from Palombara Sabina

The construction of Castiglione from Palombara Sabina dates back to a period of the High Middle Ages between 870 and 920 AD; the first certain information dates back to 1276, in a document that mentions the castle as the property of Rainaldo di Palombara, whose sons ceded it to Deodato da Cretone.

The first official document where we find the presence of Castiglione (or Castrum Castillonis) is dated 1276. In the document a rich landowner, Rinaldo di Palombara, appears as the owner of the castrum and the surrounding lands.

We have the latest news of Castiglione as an inhabited center until the early 1400s and in 1419 it appears to be an uninhabited castle. Most likely built in a single short period, the castle has almost intact its walls which, equipped with beautiful battlements, enclose an area of ??about 1200 square meters.

Within this small circle you can see the ruins of the old settlement and, on the north side, a large cistern built with the material recovered from the remains of the pre-existing Roman villa.

It is assumed that Rinaldo was also the founder of the first nucleus of the castle of Castiglione with annexed buildings used for shelter and storage of various materials. At the end of the 13th century, the castrum passes of ownership and is acquired by Giacomo Savelli, who has risen to the papal throne with the name of Honorius IV.

The Savelli family held the property until the early 14th century. Afterwards, for about a century, it changed hands several times between the Della Valle family and the Savellis themselves.
