Karst Plateau - Carso Isontino Goriziano Triestino - Virtual Tour 360°

The Karst also known as the Karst Plateau is a historical region, a limestone rocky plateau that stretches between Venezia Giulia (province of Gorizia and Trieste), Slovenia and Croatia.

Historically known for having been the scene of violent battles during the First World War, between Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops.

The term karst is derived from the name of the geographical region of the Trieste Karst, the subject of the first studies and taken as a reference, also known as the “Classic Karst”.

This toponym in turn derives from the root "kar" or "karra", of paleo-Indo-European origin with the meaning of rock, stone.

The toponyms Carnia, Carinzia, Carnaro and Carniola have the same root.

The Karst is rich in caves of various sizes, so many speleological societies have developed in the area.

The most famous are the Grotta Gigante, the Grotta delle Torri di Slivia, the Caves of San Canziano and the Caves of Postojna.
