Kremlin


Kremlin (in Russian Kreml ′) is the famous fortress in the center of Moscow, dating back to the 12th century. continuously expanded and enriched in the following years especially by Italian architects, first of all A. Fieravanti.


It is an imposing complex of buildings of various kinds (churches, palaces), it was the first residence of the tsars, then the seat of the Soviet government, then of the Russian one.


The Moscow Kremlin has a total area of ??27 hectares, enclosed by a wall of 2,500 meters, interrupted by 20 towers 80 meters high.


The Moscow Kremlin is a citadel with original features that dates back to medieval times. From 1264 it became the official residence of the Moscow princes.

The Kremlin was renovated several times throughout its history, in 1367 the original oak palisades were replaced by walls and towers carved in white stone.


Between 1485 and 1516 the defensive system of the citadel was further improved, which under Ivan III took on the appearance of an almost impregnable fortress for the technologies of the time.


Devastated by Napoleon in 1812, it was rebuilt again between 1815 and 1836; later the Grand Kremlin Palace (1839-1849) and the Armory Palace (1844-1851) were built, buildings with building details of incomparable beauty, created by ingenious architects who worked under the direction of the famous architect Konstantin Thon.
