Church of San Giovanni Battista

The Church of San Giovanni Battista stands on the homonymous hill of Triavonà, the highest in Catanzaro, where in the 11th century the castle and fortifications commissioned by Roberto il Guiscardo rose, which fell into ruin towards the 15th century due to the continuous rebellions by the citizens of Catanzaro against Count Antonio Centelles.

The church is built on a longitudinal plan with a single Latin cross nave, surmounted by a barrel vault, the facade is sculpted by a series of Ionic and Corinthian capitals, surmounted by a tympanum at the top.

It is decorated with frescoes, made in 1910 by the Crotone painter Sesto Bruno with scenes from the life of the Baptist and scenes from the life of St. John the Evangelist (the apocalypse). The four Evangelists, on the other hand, are the work of the Catanzaro painter Attilio Armone, always from the early 1900s. The interior is embellished with various paintings ascribable between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the canvas of the Madonna of Constantinople in the choir.
