The collection, curated by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, was started in the 1970s.

The current headquarters are located on the site of the former RAF Gaydon airport in South Warwickshire, which housed the Rover Group's style, technology development and testing center.

Construction began in 1991. The complex occupies 260,000 m² of land.
