Palace of the Correggio princes

Built between the end of the 15th century and 1508, the Palazzo dei Principi was initially the residence of Francesca di Brandeburgo, widow of Count Borso da Correggio.
After the fall of the Principality of Corrorci, the Palace was the seat of the Estense Governor and government offices for over two centuries.

During the nineteenth century, having lost all public prerogatives, the Palace underwent rapid and serious decay, ending up being used for different and often improper uses.

The serious state of decay induced the Municipal Administration to intervene with an initial renovation, carried out by the architect Guido Zucchini between 1925 and 1927.
In 1968 the historical archives were arranged, in 1971 the new municipal library was opened.
The major restoration works led to the reopening in 2003 of the “Giulio Einaudi” Municipal Library and in 2004 of the Museum and Historical Archives.

Today, the ground floor houses the rooms of the "Arrigo Recordati" Conference Room and, as mentioned, the "Giulio Einaudi" Municipal Library.

On the first floor are the rooms of the "Il Correggio" Museum and the Exhibition Gallery, while on the second floor are the historical city archives and the ancient collections of the library.

A superb funerary lion in Istrian stone, a fragmentary piece of a monumental Roman tomb complex found in the territory of Corror in the 17th century, is the anticipation of the museum itinerary.
