Chiavari Archaeological Museum - Rocca Palace

The Chiavari Archaeological Museum is a museum site located in the historic center of Chiavari, in the province of Genoa. The museum is housed in the seventeenth-century Palazzo Rocca.

Formerly an archaeological museum for prehistory and protohistory of Tigullio, following the movement of part of the collections into the newborn Integrated Museum System of Sestri Levante and Castiglione Chiavarese, the Museum took on this name in 2013.

Since December 2014, the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities has been managing it through the Liguria Museum Complex, which in December 2019 became the Regional Directorate for Museums.

The museum was inaugurated in 1985 in the rooms of the ancient stables of Palazzo Rocca adequately restored according to the architectural styles of the time. The museum complex collects the material found during the excavations of the pre-Roman necropolis of the eighth and seventh centuries BC, discovered in 1959.

Among the finds preserved and exposed to the public there are bronze objects and some silver and gold jewels. The museum also houses a vast collection of books and volumes dedicated to prehistoric archeology and local history.

In addition to the findings of the Chiavarese necropolis, there are also finds from the district of the Golfo Paradiso (ancient Castellaro di Uscio - Recco), jasper artifacts from the Middle Paleolithic found in Casarza Ligure in Lake Bargone, the sepulchral discoveries dating back to the Copper Age found in Val Frascarese (Castiglione Chiavarese) and other finds from Val Petronio (Valle Lagorara and Monte Loreto).

The museum preserves and exhibits archaeological materials also from Spezzino, found in the municipal area of Maissana and in the historic village of Suvero in the municipality of Rocchetta di Vara.
