State Museum of Mileto - Bishop's Palace

The State Museum of Mileto was established in 1997 on the initiative of Monsignor Domenico Tarcisio Cortese, Bishop of Mileto, and the local political authorities for the need to organize and enhance the city's enormous artistic heritage.

Housed in the Bishop's Palace, suitably restored and adapted, it preserves many of the finds from the ancient Miletus.

Its importance is undoubted, as it embraces the history of the city from the Roman era, to the Norman re-foundation of the eleventh century, up to the destructive earthquake of 1783 and the reconstruction of the city on a new site.

Particular attention was paid to the collection of numerous finds from the ancient Miletus destroyed by the earthquake of 1783: marbles, capitals and other materials preserved up to now on the initiative of the Municipality and the Bishop's Curia of Mileto and coming from the destroyed Abbey of the Holy Trinity.

The museum finds the result of various excavation campaigns on the old site of the city.
