Alexandria Cathedral - Cathedral of Saints Peter and Mark

The history of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Mark of Alexandria is troubled.

The earliest records date back to the second half of the 12th century, when the first cathedral church dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle was built between 1170 and 1175.

The church was soon too small, so substantial enlargement and adaptation interventions were carried out towards the end of the 13th century by the faber et architectus Ruffino Bottino da Casale.

The ancient cathedral resisted until the early nineteenth century, when it was demolished by order of Napoleon between February and July 1803 as part of the urban functional reorganization of the city wanted by the French Emperor.
