Teramo

The city of Teramo has very ancient origins, attributable to the Piceni and the Pretuzi, who dominated the area of ??Aprutium until the third century BC, before Roman rule, hence the term "Abruzzo".

Subsequently in the early Middle Ages, from the late 13th century under the Angevins to the 15th century under the Aragon, Teramo was the capital of an autonomous district, represented by illustrious local families such as the Melatino, in rivalry with the Duchy of Atri, then decaying to the district capital of Abruzzo Ultra, executed in 1233 by Frederick II of Swabia. Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Teramo was an important cultural center, with personalities such as Melchiorre Delfico and Francesco Savini.

Teramo

The city boasts a great artistic heritage, starting with the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (12th century), which towers over Piazza Orsini, obtained from the dismantling of the Roman amphitheater and the 1st century theater, evidence of a lively economy of the ancient Urbs Interamnia.

Recently, despite heavy urban changes in the 1960s, important works of the Roman past have been found in Largo Sant'Anna, together with the recovery of the historic Cathedral of Santa Maria in Aprutiensis (today Sant'Anna dei Pompetti).

The city is a university and bishopric.
