International Book Fair

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CULTURE

That former car factory is called Lingotto Fiere, and every year for five days it becomes our home. Anyone who loves books and culture cannot fail to be there: presentations, conferences, appointments, debates, shows, speakers and about 2,000 guests from all over the world, for a total of 1,200 events. In the past years we have had with us some authors who have made the history of twentieth century literature: a path that goes from Iosif Brodskij, who inaugurated the first edition, to Wole Soyinka, one of the most authoritative guests of last year. And again: Herta Müller, Orhan Pamuk, Salman Rushdie, Richard Ford, David Grossman, Marilynne Robinson, Mo Yan, Emmanuel Carrère, Javier Marías.

A UNIQUE PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITY

To ensure that professionals from the world of culture get to know each other and work together: this is how the SalTo Rights Center was born, the space where professionals meet and compare each other for the exchange of publishing and translation rights, and for the making films, TV series and animation. We usually have editors and agents from 40 countries around the world with us: last year, for example, there were 3,500 one-to-one meetings involving about 5,700 operators.

AN IMPORTANT EDUCATIONAL PROJECT

Every year we host tens of thousands of children, young people and adolescents up to the age of twenty at the Salone. Last year we involved about 22,000 students, of which 7,400 from the national territory. To each of them, with the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo, for more than ten years we have been dedicating an area of ??over 4,000 square meters in Pavilion 2, with set-up and scenography by the Education Department of the Castello di Rivoli. Within such a framework you have to do things right, and then we organize a cultural schedule for the children full of great guests, hundreds of hours of free workshops (from illustration to science, from the digital world to comics), libraries, games and appointments to train the readers of tomorrow, with particular attention to books for children with disabilities.

Being among the kids and involving them in reading, however, we don't like only in the five days of the Salone: ??ours is a commitment that we carry out in schools and with institutions for the rest of the year, developing initiatives and projects that have young readers at the center.

Some examples?

There is the Born to Read Award, to teach families the importance of reading from the cradle; there are reading groups in schools and libraries; the bookblog managed by the students; and above all the initiative Adopt a writer who every year brings dozens of famous authors to high schools in Piedmont.
