The Leumann Village western district

The Leumann Village western district is part of a working-class neighborhood in the Italian Art Nouveau style, built in the late nineteenth century in Collegno, just outside Turin.

It was conceived as a residential area connected to the cotton mill of the same name, one of the most important manufacturers in Piedmont, with the aim of concentrating the workforce available in the region. In a delimited area, production, housing, social and welfare institutions, and recreational facilities were integrated to form a functional and self-sufficient system.

The Leumann Village represents a remarkable example of 19th century entrepreneurial philanthropy and demonstrates a great interest in the needs of working families. During its construction, privileged living conditions were created for the time. Today, the village retains enormous historical, cultural and architectural significance.

The idea of the village was promoted by the Swiss entrepreneur Napoleon Leumann and stands out as an authentic architectural jewel in the panorama of workers' villages.

Part of the project was entrusted to the engineer Pietro Fenoglio (1865-1927), one of the leading exponents of the Liberty style in Turin.

The architecture of the village reflects the distinctive elements of the Art Nouveau style, characterized by flowing shapes, floral decorations and sinuous details.

The cotton mill plant, which is part of the complex, represents an example of industrial architecture with an austere structure typical of the 19th century. Its setting reflects the functionalist approach of the time, with attention mainly paid to production efficiency.

Overall, the Leumann Village stands out for its advanced urban and architectural conception, its link with the textile industry and its importance as a historical testimony of the period. It represents a valuable example of how architecture can be used to improve people's lives and create a harmonious community environment.
