Synagogue of Sabbioneta

The Synagogue of Sabbioneta, built in 1824 in neoclassical style, is located inside a sixteenth-century building in via Bernardino Campi 1, at the corner with the square of the church of San Rocco. The typology is that of the synagogues of the period before the emancipation, without external distinctive signs, richly decorated inside.

The decision to build the synagogue was taken in 1821 by the local Jewish community to mark its administrative autonomy from Mantua.

In Sabbioneta there was no ghetto, so there were no specific rental obligations; however, the limitations for the construction of a monumental building still remained, limitations that would fall only with emancipation.
