Central Synagogue of Milan

The Central Synagogue of Milan, built in 1892, rebuilt in 1947 and renovated again in 1997, is the main place of worship of the Jewish Community of Milan. Since 1993 it has taken the name of Hechal David u-Mordechai Central Temple. It is located in via Guastalla 19. The very rapid demographic development of the Jewish community of Milan in the nineteenth century required the construction of a large synagogue in place of the small oratory in via Stampa 4, where the cult had taken place until then. One of the new elegant districts of the city was chosen as the location.

The project was entrusted to the architect Luca Beltrami, well known in Milan for works such as the refurbishment of piazza della Scala and the restoration of the Castello Sforzesco, who was joined by the engineer Luigi Tenenti. The new Italian state also contributed to the construction with a loan at subsidized rates. The inauguration, which the local press gave wide coverage, took place on September 28, 1892 with a great crowd, in the presence of the main city authorities.
