Checche oak

The Quercia delle Checche is a monumental tree located in Val d'Orcia, in the Le Checche area, in the municipality of Pienza in the province of Siena. It is a specimen of oak (Quercus petraea).

La cecca, or checca, is the name by which the magpie is indicated in Tuscany.

The mighty tree boasts an approximate age of nearly 300 years. It has a height of 19 meters, a trunk with a perimeter of about 4.90 meters and a crown of over 34 meters in diameter.

In June 2017, the oak of the Checche obtained the MiBACT recognition: it is the first green monument in Italy.
