Bibione

Bibione is a fraction of the municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento. In 2009, its beach was ranked second in Italy after that of Rimini in terms of number of presences (about 6 million).

In 1956 the first works began to transform Bibione into a tourist area. The creation of the first hotels and shops will lead the island to the right of the Tagliamento, within 50 years, to become an important tourist resort for families. With about 2600 inhabitants, it is the most populous town in the municipality. The stretch of Bibione beach between the first row of umbrellas and the sea and the smoking ban at the lighthouse makes it the first "smoke-free" beach in Italy.

Approximately in the year 1000 the lands and territories of the island of Bibione are assigned to the bishops of nearby Concordia. With the Republic of Venice, the lagoon waters passed under its jurisdiction and Bibione went through several centuries of abandonment, returning to the land of fishermen and wild animals. In 1866 the newly born Kingdom of Italy started a reclamation of marshy land, aimed at making this marshy and malarial water even healthier.

At the beginning of the twentieth century the Consortium was set up which undertook massive embankment and canalization works in the Tagliamento river area, works that were completed around 1930, with the rehabilitation of over 10,000 hectares of surface. Along with the reclamation, the viability is also developed and Bibione is connected to the electricity and water networks. In 1956 the tourist development of Bibione began with the first hotel constructions and the development of the seaside area. In the same period, in the eastern area of ??Bibione, several families of Julian-Dalmatian refugees settle.

The name Bibione was made official in 1960 and, almost at the same time, the status of a bathing area was recognized in Bibione. Since 1961 Bibione has been mentioned in the Touring Club yearbook. Today Bibione is a very popular seaside resort especially for German, Austrian, Hungarian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Dutch, Belgian, Romanian, Swiss tourists and tourists from the rest of Italy-Europe.
