Scanno Lake

Lake Scanno is a mountain lake, located in Abruzzo, belonging to about 3/4 of its surface to the territory of the municipality of Villalago and about 1/4 to that of Scanno. The lake is a public use asset of the two municipalities mentioned. It originated from an ancient landslide detached from the mountain above Genzana which blocked the course of the river Tasso in a period between 12,820 and 3,000 years ago.

The lake, located in the lower province of L'Aquila, between the Marsicano Mountains, in the upper valley of the Sagittario river, at an altitude of 922 meters above sea level. and surrounded by some peaks of the Marsican Mountains such as the Montagna Grande to the west and Monte Genzana to the east, it has very small coasts which for some short stretches have been adapted for the reception of bathers forming artificial pebble beaches. It is located halfway between Villalago and Scanno, and is the largest natural lake in the region. From some views it looks like a heart, such as from the Frattura Nuova viewpoint, not far from the huge landslide of Mount Rava that generated the lake barring the Sagittario valley.

The lake has the Tasso and Giordano torrents as well as some minor and seasonal rivers; it does not seem to have superficial emissaries because due to the karst phenomenon the lake waters come out of the ground a little further downstream, in the municipality of Villalago, giving life to the Sagittario river. During the winter, sometimes a stream crosses the valley from the lake to Villalago generating other smaller lakes, fed by rainwater and the thaw of the snow until late spring, called Cupaglione, Lago Secco or Laguccio, Lago Pio or Cupìa and Good lake. The maximum depth it reaches varies from a minimum of 30 meters to 32 meters when there is a flood.
