Villa Giustiniani

Grandiose complex belonging to the Ville del Polesine, fenced dating back to the sec. XVI, renovated in the middle of the eighteenth century and also expanded in the nineteenth century, belonged to the Giustiniani family of Venenzia. Chapel from 1758 restored in 1884. Can be visited with permission from the current owners. S. Martino di Venezze, Center located 12 km north-east of Rovigo, in the middle Polesine, at 6 m s.m. on the right of the Adige.

Municipality of 31.10 km2 with 4104 inhabitants; production of cereals, sugar beets, wine grapes, apples, potatoes and fodder; textile and building materials industries. The phenomenon of the villa occurs in Polesine only from 1516, after having been the subject of violent controversies for over a century between the Duchy of Ferrara and the Venetian Republic. With the advent of the Serenissima, a long period of peace and relative well-being began which lasted almost three centuries, until the Treaty of Campoformio of 1797.

Favored by the new political climate, Venetian nobles and numerous exponents of the Emilian nobility (owners of vast extensions along the Po and upper Polesine riverside belt) discover that living there is pleasant thanks to the large reclamation works. The first "noble country houses" were modest houses that will become richer over time. Many of the art villas that arise in Polesine, reflect the particularity of some built on the Riviera del Brenta, that is, it happens that the villa is accessible almost exclusively by water near rivers and navigable canals.
