Collalbo

Collalbo (Klobenstein in German) is a fraction - and seat of the town hall - of the scattered Italian municipality of Renon, in the province of Bolzano.

The town is the largest inhabited center of the Renon plateau and is located at 1156 m asl.

It is the terminus of the Renon railway. There are numerous hotels, restaurants, shops and holiday homes.

There are also nursery schools, primary and secondary schools for the children and young people of the hamlets of the plateau.

Among the productive activities, craftsmanship, which is renowned for the processing of glass aimed at the production of mosaics and paintings, maintains a pre-eminent role. Famous for the Christmas market with stalls set up in small houses in the shape of wagons, the same ones to get on to move between Soprabolzano and Collalbo.

Before the Great War, Sigmund Freud stayed at the Hotel Bemelmans for several summers, to whom the Freud-Promenade was dedicated.

It was August 13, 1907 when the Renon train was joyfully inaugurated, leading from Piazza Walther, in the center of Bolzano, directly to the Renon Plateau. Between Bolzano and Maria Assunta, thanks to the cogwheel drive, the train overcame a difference in altitude of just under 1,000 meters above sea level before continuing on a flat path from Maria Assunta to Soprabolzano, Stella and Collalbo.
