National Roman Museum - Massimo Palace at the Spa Altemps

Massimo Palace at the Spa Altemps (Palazzo Massimo alle Terme or Altemps Palace) is the main of the four seats of the National Roman Museum, together with the original seat of the Baths of Diocletian, which currently houses the epigraphic and protohistoric section, in Altemps Palace, home to the Renaissance collections of ancient sculpture, and to the Crypta Balbi, home of the early medieval collection.

An excellent museum a stone's throw from Termini and is located in the Castro Pretorio district in Piazza dei Cinquecento.

Perhaps a little underestimated by the general tourist public.

It is worth a visit for the masterpieces on display and we recommend the audio guide which is very useful to deepen the visit.

The exhibition area occupies four of the floors from which the building is made up, the other rooms being reserved for offices of the Special Superintendence of Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Rome. The museum exhibition is divided into subsections that illustrate the most important moments of the artistic production of ancient Rome.

The Museum houses the "section of ancient art" with figurative works from the late republican, imperial and late ancient periods on the ground floor, first and second floor (including the works of art of the great residences of the senatorial order, with Greek originals brought to Rome in ancient times) as well as a "numismatics and goldsmiths section" on aspects of the Roman economy in the basement.
