Baia Domizia

Baia Domizia (sometimes erroneously written, as in the Latin language, with the "t" Baia Domitia) is an Italian seaside tourist resort, located in Campania in the Gulf of Gaeta and is part of the municipality of Sessa Aurunca and the municipality of Cellole in the province of Caserta. It is located on the border with Lazio, from which it is separated by the Garigliano river.

In ancient times, the stretch of the pine forest at the mouth of the Garigliano was, first for the Italic populations and then for the ancient Romans, a lucus (sacred wood) dedicated to the goddess Marìca, nymph of the marshes and waters, whose temple was located on the opposite bank of the river, in the territory of Minturno.

Shortly before the collapse of the empire, in the summer of 458, a group of Vandals, led by Genseric's brother-in-law, landed at the mouth of the Garigliano and devastated the area full of noble villas, sacking it: the threat was eradicated by the intervention of the imperial army, commanded by one of the last Roman emperors, Majorian, who personally led the army by defeating the Vandals near Sinuessa and chasing them, while they were weighed down by the loot, to the ships.
