San Giulio Island - Virtual Tour 360°

The only (natural) island within the perimeter of Lake Orta, the small Island of San Giulio is an integral part of the municipal territory of Orta San Giulio, whose village is located on the peninsula overlooking the islet.

Already inhabited in the Neolithic, like the neighboring areas, the island was left empty by the Romans, while it was occupied by pre-Christian settlements, with San Giulio himself who built a church there around the year 390.

In the Lombard and early Middle Ages a castrum was built there, thanks to the particular position that made it suitable for safely hosting important characters and figures, but already in 1219 the property passed to the Church which, in 1841, demolished the medieval castle to build it a seminary, which in 1973 changed into a monastery, the Mater Ecclesiae, of important cultural profile, thanks to the presence of laboratories for research and restoration of ancient fabrics.
